Soon after that, I painted it all white, we mounted the TV on the wall, and we hid all of the cords.
Just those small updates already made it look much better! After that, I spray pained the gold trim black with high heat black spray paint. I also took marble contact paper and attached that to our fireplace. It was a cheap, easy update!
Anyways, this is what our fireplace looked like since 2017 (but I did paint over the black spray paint drips on the trim).
The look of our fireplace was, eh, okay. I could deal with it, but I knew that it didn't really look that great.
A random day in January I decided to try and remove that swirly decorative accent at the top of the fireplace because I thought it made it look super dated. My plan was to just remove that accent and then paint it white where it was, but once I removed that I couldn't stop. I removed the horizontal trim right below the swirl, and also removed the metal frame around the fireplace insert (what I attached the marble contact paper to). This is what I was left with:
So Hudson and I took a trip to home depot to look for some tile.
I found this hexagon tile for only like.. $2 a sheet?! It was so cheap, I had to get it! Plus i'm a sucker for the hexagon tile. It's so classic.
I got home and immediately started tiling.
It took me a few hours and I actually completed this tile project myself! I was able to cut the tile using a small hand cutter.
The next day I completely cleaned out the inside of the fireplace. I removed the fake logs and decided to take my black high heat spray paint and paint the inside. I also took off the wire spiral curtains and spray pained those black as well. It made it look much more cleaner. I restacked the logs inside.
This is what the final product looks like:
I feel as if it makes it look much more modern and clean! I couldn't believe the difference when I was finished and wish I would've done it sooner.
Here's the progress of my fireplace side-by-side:
I'm so happy with how it turned out! I still want to add drywall above the fireplace to make it look "built in", but I think we will have to hire someone to do that. Maybe in the future. For now, we are super happy with how it looks!
