Our Honeymoon: Part 1
Aloha! I can't believe our honeymoon on the Big Island has come and gone. It was absolutely the best trip with gorgeous views, great food, relaxing, and it was so great to spend it together.
After our dramatic drive to the airport where we almost missed our plane (read here), we were on our way to Hawaii. We were so excited to spend the week relaxing on the beach. The flight to Hawaii from the east coast is no joke. Our first flight went to Boston, then we went to LA, and from there we finally flew into Kona.
I remember being so excited as we exited the plane and got in our rental car. It was around 9pm when we got to Hawaii so we drove to our resort in the dark. We stayed at the Fairmont Orchid. When we arrived at our resort, we were greeted with macadamia nut necklaces. There were flamed torches lit everywhere and the ambience was so romantic. Light acoustic music was playing and there was a light breeze. We headed to our room and were greeted with swans made of towels, more Hawaiian necklaces, and chilled champagne. We were exhausted from the day of travel, so we ordered room service, popped the champagne and had a few glasses, and then went to bed.
The next morning we woke up around 5:30am. Hawaii is 6 hours behind Eastern time, so the entire trip we went to bed early and woke up early. We included the breakfast buffet in our package which we took advantage of. After breakfast, we explored the resort. It was so beautiful. I loved our resort because it was like we were in our own little world. It wasn't overcrowded, and it was the perfect place to spend a honeymoon. The last thing we wanted when we were looking for a honeymoon destination was a resort that was over touristy and had a ton of people and children running around. This was the complete opposite, which was perfect for us.
That day we booked a couple excursions to do during the week and then went to Walmart and picked up some groceries and alcohol. It was much cheaper to do this than to eat/drink every day at the resort, we learned. The rest of that first day we just spent relaxing on the beach and exploring the resort.
The next morning, we booked a couples massage at the spa. Honestly, this was probably my favorite thing we did all week. We got to relax in the sauna before the massage, and then our massage actually took place in the gardens of the resort beside a waterfall. I remember listening to the water and hearing the local birds chirping during the massage and just being in heaven. Trevor and I both agreed that we wished we could start every morning that way. ;-)
Our first few days on the island were spent relaxing on the beach, eating amazing food, and enjoying the resort. Stay tuned for future posts about our experience going to a Hawaiian Luau, learning about the culture, and exploring Volcanoes National Park. :)
