Sammy is FOUR!

Growing up, I was always jealous of my friends who got their very own dog to play with. I loved going to their houses and playing with the dogs while wishing I had one. Unfortunately, my dad was always against getting a dog. I think he must have had a tragic incident with a dog in the past, because he always told us that we were never EVER getting a dog.

Well, one day in the summer I woke up to my mom telling me that our relative up the valley had free lab puppies, and that some of dad's friends were getting one. Mom decided then that this was the perfect opportunity to get our dog. We hopped in the van and went up the valley.

We got out of the van to see a kennel with about 4 or 5 puppies. They were all chocolate labs, except for two golden ones. Luke, Carly, and I instantly started playing with all of the puppies, trying to decide which one we wanted. The owner told us that she was keeping the one yellow lab for herself, so there would only be one yellow lab left. We examined all of the puppies. The chocolate labs were all running around playfully and hyper, while the yellow lab walked around calmly. Instantly, Luke and Carly were attached to the chocolate ones, but for some reason I fell in love with the yellow one. I had always loved yellow labs. I think they are so ridiculously cute as puppies. So, after some convincing of Luke and Carly, we were soon on our way home with the cutest lab puppy ever.

On the way home we discussed what we should name our puppy. Everyone came up with names, but nothing really seemed to fit. The owner told us that she had named him "Sampson", but that we could change it. I started thinking about it, and thought, "Hey, how about we keep the name Sampson, but shorten it to Sammy?". And everyone agreed on it.

Sammy grew up so fast. I can't even describe how fast he went from a 20lb puppy to a 120 pound dog. (He is so big because he is half lab, half german shepard)

The best part? When dad found out, he wasn't that angry. I think he actually may even have a soft spot for Sammy.

So 4 years ago today was the day that Sammy and his siblings were born. I'm so thankful for my very first dog. I finally got the puppy I was always longing for :)

Things I love about my puppy:
1. He makes me happy every time I see him.

2. Whenever I get home from work/school or any other place, he is the first person to greet me right at my car door.

3. He makes me laugh, always.

4. I love how huge he is. I love giving him huge hugs.

5. I love how we give him a bath, and then he goes to roll in something nasty such as dead animal or cow manure. (okay, I don't really like this one, but it does make me laugh)

6. I love in the summer when it's really hot and i'm sitting on the porch swing, he'll come up to me and drool will roll off his tongue and onto my leg. (okay, i don't actually like this one either but it is cute)

7. I love how we can never play with any kind of ball outside, because Sammy always claims it as his own.

8. I love how he sticks his head out the window when we take him on trips in the car.

9. I love how once he gets out of the car, there is a layer of dog hair everywhere.

10. I love how he runs around the house as fast as he possibly can when he's happy. He sprints everywhere. He dodges cars and trees. He will run at full speed towards our legs, and then dodge us at the last possible second. It makes me laugh so hard.

Happy Fourth Birthday Sammy!
(Or happy 28th birthday in dog years)
